About
Dr Debra Powell
My therapeutic approach is individualised respecting the subjective experience of the individual. In my clinical practice I draw on several approaches such as Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) along with Person Centred and Humanistic approaches.
My specialist area is working with adults 18 - 60 years, couples, older adults and perinatal clients. As a Counselling psychologist working within an NHS setting and private practice, I have the experience of working therapeutically with individuals and couples from a range of cultural backgrounds struggling with a large spectrum of difficulties, of varying severity. These include depressive disorders (including post-natal depression), relationship and attachment difficulties, anxiety disorders (including OCD, post traumatic stress, health anxiety, phobias and panic attacks), low self esteem, identity issues, domestic violence and bereavement.
As a practitioner I am enthusiastic about the importance of the therapeutic relationship viewing this as a collaborative and interactive process. I believe in working in an empathic, present, and relational way with clients, working alongside enabling them to cope, manage and move forward. The focus for individuals is to help the individual heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. The focus of therapy for couples is to resolve difficulties through opening up communication to improve the relationship.
